Hey Everyone! Just wanted to give you a quick update about our first day in Haiti. Our flights went off without a hitch. We arrived in Haiti, at about 3:00 (Haitian time), which is an hour behind the east. Flying into Haiti was the most overwhelming experience. From above you could see all the homes, and destruction that was caused from the earthquake. We landed, went through customs, got our bags, and were greeted by our All Hands Shuttle drivers helper. The drive to Leogane from Port au Prince, is about 30 miles, but took about 2.5 hours.....the most eye-opening 2.5 hours of my life. There are basically no roads, no speed limitis, and honking galore....there was so much going on around us, it was hard to capture it all. An amazing experience, and little nerve racking at times. I noticed all the different smells, and types of buildings, and all the smiles on peoples faces as we drove by; couldn't help but feel a little sad. The streets were surrounded by people all over, with small tents for business' and individuals trying to sell various food items. There were tents lined up and scattered throughout the grass for people to sleep in. I can't put these images into words, images I only imagined seeing on televsion, never dreaming I'd see them first hand. We arrived at the Base, which to my surprise is a lot as I'd envisioned...we set up in bunks, were toured throughout the base, and tried to get settled in. Most frustrating part of everything so far, probably would have to be setting up our mosquito nets over our beds....you would not believe how difficult that is..especially without light. As for the bathroom and shower situation...lets just say it could be worse! Bucket showers, and...well I'll spare you the details for the bathroom. Most of the people we have met thus far have been here for an extended time and will be leaving with us next week! Just started raining...gonna try to get a good nights sleep...got a busy day ahead of us...orientation!! If you have any questions feel free to post them, and I'll get to them as soon as possible! Miss you all!!
Love,
Becca
